Navy Life Insurance

Whether you’re active duty or a member of the United States Navy Reserve, all military servicemembers are eligible for Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI). You also have the option to cover your spouse and dependents with Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) policies. These guaranteed acceptance group term policies offer a basic starting place for many sailors, but they are rarely enough to truly cover the needs of a Navy family because they are one-size-fits-all policies. They do not take into account you and your family members as individuals and your individual situation.

Factors such as your age, income, health history, and other personal circumstances all play a role in determining what kind of life insurance policy is right for you and how much coverage you really need. Depending on your unique situation, the government’s life insurance offerings are likely not enough for you and your family.

Common Questions

Veterans and military retirees do not automatically receive life insurance, but they may be eligible to purchase coverage when leaving the military. To qualify for Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI), you must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Had part-time Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) as a member of the National Guard or Reserves, and you suffered an injury or disability while on duty that disqualifies you for standard premium insurance rates
  • Had SGLI while you were in the military and you’re within 1 year and 120 days of being released from an active-duty period of 31 or more days
  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of retiring or being released from the Ready Reserves or National Guard
  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of assignment to the Individual Ready Reserves (IRR) of a branch of service, or to the Inactive National Guard (ING). This includes members of the United States Public Health Service Inactive Reserve Corps (IRC)
  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of being put on the Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL)

VGLI rates vary depending on your age and the amount of coverage you want. Most transitioning sailors find out that VGLI is a very expensive option for Veterans and retirees, unless you are already suffering from an adverse health history. Because the cost increases every 5 years, the premiums on VGLI quickly become unaffordable. AAFMAA offers a variety of Navy life insurance policies suited to meet any sailor’s or Navy Veteran’s needs. Call 800-522-5221 for more information or to get a quote today.

Through Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI), you can purchase $10,000 to $400,000 in life insurance benefits, based on the amount of SGLI coverage you had when you left the military. You can increase your coverage by $25,000 every 5 years—up to $400,000—until you’re 60 years old.

VGLI is guaranteed acceptance group life insurance and may be the only option for Veterans and retirees who are suffering from adverse medical conditions. However, any Veteran in relatively good health, deserves a more affordable option tailored to their specific situation and needs. AAFMAA offers a variety of life insurance policies for Veterans.
