Army Life Insurance

Whether you’re active duty or a member of the United States Army Reserve or National Guard, all military servicemembers are eligible for Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI). You also have the option to cover your spouse and dependents with Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) policies.

These group term policies are guaranteed acceptance and serve as a basic starting point for soldiers and their families. However, these one-size-fits-all plans are rarely enough to cover all the needs of an Army family since they do not take into account you and your family members’ unique circumstances.

Age, income and health history—for example—all play a role in determining which type of life insurance policy is right for you and how much coverage you really need. Depending on your specific situation, government-sponsored life insurance products are likely not enough to suit the needs of your family.

Common Questions

Through Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI), servicemembers can purchase up to a maximum of $400,000 of life insurance coverage in increments of $50,000. You’re also eligible to receive 120 days of free coverage beginning the day your transition out of the Army.

Servicemembers also have the option to purchase coverage for their dependents through Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI). FSGLI provides a term life insurance benefit of up to $100,000 for a member's spouse. Coverage of $10,000 for dependent children is included with the servicemember’s policy at no charge.

For many Army families, SGLI and FSGLI policies do not provide adequate coverage to meet their specific needs. AAFMAA offers a variety of Army life insurance policies suited to meet the needs of individuals and families through each stage of military life. Visit our Life Insurance page for more information about our policies.

Veterans and military retirees do not automatically receive life insurance benefits. However, you may be eligible to purchase Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) when leaving the military as long as you meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Had SGLI while you were in the Army and you’re within 1 year and 120 days of being released from an active-duty period of 31 or more days

  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of assignment to the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard

  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of retiring or being released from the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard

  • Had part-time SGLI as a member of the National Guard or Reserves, and you suffered an injury or disability while on duty that disqualifies you for standard premium insurance rates

  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of being put on the Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL)

VGLI is guaranteed acceptance group life insurance, however, rates vary depending on your age and the amount of coverage you want. Additionally, the cost of coverage increases every 5 years, which means VGLI premiums quickly become unaffordable.
