Military Benefits

The New HCFSA for Active-Duty Servicemembers

2025-03-13

As an optional pre-tax benefit, the Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) can be used to pay for eligible medical, dental, and vision care out-of-pocket expenses not covered by TRICARE or another healthcare plan. Servicemembers and reservists on active duty for more than 180 days are now eligible to participate in the HCFSA and may sign up during a special enrollment period, from March 3 through March 31, 2025. In the future, participants must sign up each year during the usual open season to continue using the HCFSA.

To discuss how the HCFSA can help make medical expenses more affordable, Sarah Roder, AAFMAA Director of Partnership and Member Engagement, spoke with Monique Street, CFP®, AFC®, AAFMAA Wealth Management & Trust LLC (AWM&T) Relationship Manager. Street works with military families to help them achieve their financial goals. She is a military spouse and former Blue Star Fellow with a bachelor’s degree in business from Alabama A&M University and a master’s degree in financial planning from the University of Alabama. Street resides in Maryland with her family.
