How Music Benefits Mental Health

2024-05-24

Although there has long been stigma in the military for servicemembers seeking help dealing with mental health issues, it is no longer a taboo subject. The Washington Tattoo, which offers music, marching, dance, and various other displays performed by military and civilian personnel, uses the power of music to help deal with mental health challenges. Music can be helpful in regulating mood, and it can even serve as a tool for servicemembers and Veterans to break through trauma.

To discuss how music can help servicemembers and Veterans cope with mental health challenges, Sarah Bumgardner, AAFMAA Director of Partnerships and Member Engagement, spoke with Mark Reilly, President and CEO of The Washington Tattoo. Reilly retired after serving 20 years in the military and is an internationally recognized performer, speaker, educator, consultant, and producer. His work has been showcased nationally and internationally at many prestigious venues including the White House, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Edinburgh Castle, and the Vatican. Reilly holds degrees in music education from Northwestern State and Boston Universities and is an adjunct professor at West Virginia University.
