Since last June, three new board members have been serving AAFMAA. As we start 2016, get acquainted with the newest leaders. With their extensive and dedicated military careers, MG William M. Matz, Jr. (USA, Ret.), RADM Janice M. Hamby (USN, Ret.) and CW3 Robin H. Boudiette, Jr. (USA, Ret.) are valuable assets to the AAFMAA Board of Directors.
MG Matz’s decorated career in the U.S. Army took him all over the world and included both Airborne and Afloat assignments.
After his commissioning, he had only one stateside assignment before deployment to the demilitarized zone in Korea. Then in the late 1960s, he served in the Vietnam War. It would not be the last time he would see Korea and Vietnam.
After returning stateside for brief Assistant Professor Role for the ROTC Department of Middlebury College, he was deployed once again to Asia in 1970. From there, he planned and participated in a number of different operations in both Vietnam and Korea.
Matz also served as Executive Secretary to the Secretary of Defense in Washington before assuming the position of Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army, Pacific in 1990. He ultimately retired from the Army in 1995, after serving nearly four years as the Deputy Commanding General of First Corps and Fort Lewis.
Following his military retirement, Matz’s civilian career included management roles with Northrup Grumman and executive roles with the National Association for Uniformed Services, an organization for veterans.
RADM Hamby brings a distinguished history to AAFMAA, having served in many capacities in the U.S. Navy.
Commissioned in 1980 from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Hamby served as a Commander in both Washington and at Naval Base Pearl Harbor before earning two master’s degrees, one in Business Administration and one in Information Systems Management, from Boston University. An academic with a number of scholastic accolades, one of Hamby’s naval assignments was teaching Computer Sciences at the U.S. Military Academy.
Hamby’s impressive technical background contributed to her success in the Navy. In the late 1990s, she commanded the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station in Jacksonville, Fla. She simultaneously coordinated the computer systems and imbedded facilities of the Navy’s Southeast Region. She had major command of technology operations both in the U.S. and abroad as official assignments.
She was promoted to Rear Admiral in 2009. She reported to the Office of the Secretary of Defense staff from 2011 until she retired in the fall of 2012.
Like RADM Hamby, CW3 Boudiette has a substantial background in technology. Throughout his military career, he was in charge of many telecommunications operations.
His 24-year Army Career took him to bases across Germany and the United States as part of communications and electronics assignments. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 in fall 2009 from a three year position as the NEC Communications Branch Chief of Fort Sill.
He didn’t travel very far after leaving the Army though. Immediately following his retirement, he was selected to become the first ever Chief of the brand new Garrison Information Management Office at Fort Sill.
MG Matz, RADM Hamby and CW3 Boudiette collectively provide a variety of diverse experiences and perspectives that will be important in the strategic planning of AAFMAA going forward.
